Friedlaender considered autograph only those works cited in early biographies of Caravaggio by Baglione, Bellori and Mancini. This catalogue is divided into three parts: accepted works, paintings erroneously attributed to Caravaggio in the literary sources, and those paintings mentioned in the sources, but whose whereabout are not known. There have been various subsequent reprints.
