The first volume was originally published in 1939 as "The Artist of the Revolution; the Early Life of Charles Willson Peale." Although it is generally considered to be a catalogue rasionné, this early study on the artist is essentially a biography, organized chronologically (portraits are listed by sitter's name). The second volume includes a genealogy of the Peale family.
