Description

"HERO MOTHER: Contemporary Art by Post-Communist Women Rethinking Heroism" is an international exhibition of 30 women artists from 20 countries, focusing on the role of gender, citizenship, nationalism, migration and personal freedom, as well as relations between artists and state structures. This exhibition looks at the ramifications of traditionalist political forces as they are unleashed upon women, the queer community and other minorities at a time of increasingly resurgent conservative values. The artists invited to take part in "HERO MOTHER" are contemporary women from places with communist legacies whose work addresses and defies, through a variety of media, the frighteningly regressive political agendas of many Eastern European countries today, outing this in the context of broader developments worldwide. The "HERO MOTHER" exhibition took place at MOMENTUM Berlin, in the Kunstquartier Bethanien Art Center, on 14 May - 12 June 2016, and was accompanied by a Symposium and Performance Program.

"HERO MOTHER" is the sister exhibition to MOMENTUM's 2015 show "BALAGAN!!! Contemporary Art from the Former Soviet Union and Other Mythical Places".  "BALAGAN!!!" tools place simultaneously at 3 venues across Berlin: the MOMENTUM gallery in the Kunstquartier Bethanien Art Center, the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor
am Max Liebermann Haus, and Külhaus.  The Exhibition was accompanied by a Symposium at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, a Lecture Series at the ICI (Institute for Cultural Inquiry), and a Performance Program.
