The catalogue raisonné of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) gathers 325 paintings organized chronologically, all reproduced. This publication has not only become a reference in the study of the artist’s œuvre, but was the first catalogue of paintings, and the first volume published outside of the series “L’Art français.” A section titled “Éloge d’Ingres” traces Ingres’ long, successful career and follows the evolution of his work, rooted in religious and classical culture, but which also embraced sensual portraits and nudes.
Chiefly illustrations. This is the second, revised edition; the first dates from 1954.
