The catalogue raisonné was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Fundación Marcelino Botín in Santander and the Museo Municipal, Madrid. The prologue is followed by various essays including a biography, and studies on the artist as a painter, draughtsman and engraver, and an essay on Madrazo and collecting. The bibliography has a list of abbreviations ulitized for cited publications and periodicals. The artist's original inventory of 1835 is reproduced, along with a genealogy of Madrazo's family.
