Dorival has based his definitive study on three earlier catalogues of the artist's works (Courthion's 1962 monograph published in both French and English editions, Chapon study of the graphic work, both quoted in this database, and the Girardin bequest made to the "Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris") but here he takes a closer look on the chronological periods and undated works. This catalogue is arranged basically in chronological order, however this arrangement is somewhat modified by many of the works' long periods of execution, and the placement of undated works into the period to which they belong.
