This volume covers with subjects from classical history and literature, as well as other secular and religious historical subjects, ie. Joan of Arc. The first volume contains the texts, and includes a discussion of Rubens' books; an essay on morals and meanings in Rubens' historical paintings, and a chapter on 'Ovid and the Art of Love'. The second volume contains the catalogue raisonné of 58 historical subjects, plus related works, studies and preparatory drawings, etc. There are also separate indices of subjects, names and places, and other works by or after Rubens cited in the text.
