The present publication greatly expands, and has a concordance to, Willi Grohmann's 1963 monograph on the artist. The first volume contains a biography, a list of exhibitions, and the bibliography. The second volume contains the catalogue raisonné of paintings, listing 2,200 works with illustrations, plus 16 photographs of the artist's studio. Entries give number, title, medium and support, dimensions, signature, collection, provenance, auctions when known, references, exhibition information, some commentary with annotations and discussion of thematic issues (with cross references to the catalogues by Spielmann and Ponert, cited in this database).
